Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened

If Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and H.P. Lovecraft had ever collaborated on a novel, the duo might have come up with a spooky saga a lot like Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened. This adventure, the third in Frogwares Game Development Company's series featuring the protagonist of such classic mysteries as The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Sign of Four, pits the deerstalker-wearing detective against the horrors of the Cthulhu mythos. While that combination may sound more like fan-fiction cheese than a pulp-fiction dream team, the tale here is told brilliantly, and the adventure mechanics are as faultlessly logical as the legendary sleuth himself.

That doesn't mean that the game is easy. On the contrary, Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. Watson, have to be extremely careful and observant to stop cultists from setting off Cthulhu's alarm clock. The big difference between The Awakened and the average adventure with its walk-through-prompting leaps of stupidity is that you can figure out all of the challenges that come your way if you approach them as Holmes himself. This means that you need to closely examine your surroundings, keeping an eye out for footprints, scraps of cloth, bits of fiber, and other nearly imperceptible clues that can help you unravel the mystery. In fact, this mystery begins with a missing servant and turns into a globe-spanning investigation into (cue Lovecraftian purple prose) indescribable eldritch horrors from beyond time and space!

However, the game isn't a tedious pixel hunt. If you scan all of the backdrops with Holmes' or Watson's practiced eyes, you'll spot important items almost immediately. Such key areas as desks and shelves can also usually be zoomed in on, so you know when something needs a look-see with Holmes' trusty magnifying glass. There is a great sense of consistency and internal logic at work here that keeps you on the right path as long as you scrutinize everything in sight. You are also presented with the odd bit of old-fashioned adventure-game goofiness. At one point, you McGyver together a blowgun out of a pipe and a hypodermic syringe, but much of the time, it feels like you're a real detective running down leads and collecting clues.

Yet simply observing everything and slapping together makeshift weapons won't prevent cultists from summoning Cthulhu. There are a lot of puzzles to solve during the course of the game, including a couple of combination door locks, a devilish clock conundrum that must be solved to open a safe, a few extraordinarily tough ciphers, and even one challenge to draw the bloody pentagram that serves as the sign of Lovecraft's Great Old Ones. Holmes must also take evidence back to labs (both in his famous flat at 221 B Baker St. and elsewhere) and examine it under a microscope or cook it up with other solvents in a mechanical contraption to separate the elements. Some of this can be a little finicky. Sometimes you have to use a scalpel or tweezers just right on a piece of evidence slabbed under the microscope. Hot spots in the game can occasionally be a touch tricky to activate as well. Still, the hands-on feel of these various challenges more than makes up for a few minor technical issues.

Visual presentation also makes it seem as if The Awakened is right at your fingertips. Unlike the traditional third-person adventure or stutter-step Myst clone, this game is depicted in first-person shooter style. You look through the eyes of Holmes or Watson and have complete range of movement in full 3D environments that are attractive and atmospheric. The story also takes you all over the globe, so you get to sleuth your way from London to Germany to New Orleans and back again. Some of the background scenery is a bit flat, although the characters are beautifully drawn and loaded with such detail that you can see the pores and 5 o'clock shadow on Watson's face. Lifeless street scenes are all that interfere with the illusion of stepping into the 19th century. For example, Holmes' neighborhood in London is practically deserted in the middle of the day; the only citizens in sight are a newsboy member of the Baker St. Irregulars, a hansom cabdriver, and a woman selling flowers. This sure isn't the bustling capital of the Victorian world brought to life in Doyle's short stories.

Audio is straight out of the BBC. Although the acting and dialogue are unsurprisingly more workmanlike than the fantastic Sherlock Holmes TV adaptations from the early '90s starring Jeremy Brett, everything remains entirely believable. However, some of the cutscenes are rather wordy, and there isn't any way to skip them or even fast-forward through specific lines. In some ways, this actually adds to the gameplay because it forces you to concentrate on every word spoken, much like the obsessive Holmes would have--or not. Holmes is awfully talky and obnoxious a lot of the time, so there are moments when you long for the ability to just hit the escape button to shut him up. The soundtrack is also sufficiently ominous and worthy of a TV show or movie. Unfortunately, slight audio clipping mars the main score on the menu screen and during level loads.

Both true to the character of Sherlock Holmes and a rip-roaring pulp adventure in its own right, The Awakened is a must-play game. Mystery lovers with a taste for the supernatural will feel right at home with this slice of Cthulhu-infused Victoriana.

Premier Manager 08 Announced

Sure to please fans of the series, Zoo announced today that the latest installment in the popular Premier Manager franchise will be coming to the Playstation 2 and PC from the 17th of August this year.

As the thirteenth series outing (only unlucky for those that aren’t footy fans we’re sure!), Premier Manage 08 promises to deliver “a host of improvements over previous versions such as all new character and facilities systems and a new set of analytical tools.”

For a franchise that is so heavily reliant on menus, 08 will feature a completely refreshed user interface, which aims to make the game the most accessible management title on the market.

Adam Prichard, Commercial Director at ZOO Digital Publishing commented:

“Premier Manager is a strong brand with an undoubted tradition and pedigree. We fully expect next season’s release to be a great success for us.

We will be releasing Premier Manager 08 the day before the Premiership kicks off next season which gives us a good advantage in the market as it gets us on the shelf at an optimum time.

The great thing about PM is that it is so user-friendly and offers a more ‘pick up and play’ experience than many of the other management games that are available. It provides an assessable entry point into management simulation for gamers of all ages and experience.”

Of course the player database will be updated to include the latest adjustment up to and including the summer 2007 period. As mentioned previously, Premier Manager 08 will be available this August for the PC and the Playstation 2.

There is no room for compromise. No room for mercy. No room for anything but the complete eradication of anyone with opposing belief systems.
Labeled the Infinite War, this horrific conflict has shattered a once peaceful galaxy and only served to deepen the hatred and schisms between the three factions. Now, after centuries of struggle, the battle for supremacy has at long last reached a turning point. You are a Supreme Commander, and only you have the power to bring the Infinite War to an end once and for all.
The fate of the galaxy is in your hands.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

Command & Conquer 3 gets the series back to its roots in the Tiberium universe, with new gameplay features that rewards players for their own unique play styles. Beyond the new story and gameplay tweaks, added new features include voice-over IP, integrated clan support, and new spectator modes. It is 2047 and the stakes could not be higher. Tiberium -- a self-replicating alien substance that has infected the Earth -- is spreading like a radioactive ice age. The GDI, a high-tech alliance of the world's most advanced nations, is fighting to contain Tiberium, but Kane, the megalomaniacal leader of The Brotherhood of NOD has other plans for Earth. Kane's secret society turned superpower is bent on using Tiberium to take control and transform humanity into his twisted vision of the future. All-out war rages over Tiberium and the fate of the planet rests in the balance.

Seeing the Tiberium universe is a welcome reunion. GDI and Nod are still battling it out but this time they have to contend with a new alien Scrin faction. These guys have a large presence in the game though their personality isn't as strongly developed as the GDI or Nod. Along with the large campaigns for Nod and GDI, you'll get the chance to play a bonus four mission Scrin campaign after completing the other two.

Also back are the famous live-action cutscenes that fans love so much. EA stayed true to the original series with a campy, cheesy, silly sci-fi plot and we're plenty happy about it. There are a surprising number of TV and movie actors playing roles here and while their acting talent isn't exactly put to the test, they're still pretty fun to see in roles like this. Who doesn't want to see Billy Dee Williams and Michael Ironside on screen together? It's like a B-movie bonanza. The Scrin campaign cutscenes had to take a different tack since I don't think anyone wanted to see a guy in a foam rubber suit gurgling like an alien. Thankfully it's awesome and effective in its simplicity fitting perfectly into the overall cutscene structure while maintaining a definitive alien perspective.

The campaign structure progresses well. Locations range across globe on three different types of terrain. Missions themselves usually involve either base defense or destruction of one kind or another. While most missions were fairly predictable, creativity wasn't totally absent, especially in the Nod campaign where missions were designed to highlight their stealth capabilities. There's also a good variety of secondary missions on every map granting plenty of gameplay objectives. The campaign AI rarely forces your hand, allowing players to sit back and relax aside from some ramped up and difficult later missions.

Once done with the campaigns, you'll be able to sink into skirmish and multiplayer. Each of the factions has enough differences in the way they behave to keep gameplay interesting. The Scrin, for instance, are better at harvesting tiberium and aren't affected by its radiation. GDI can't send infantry across tiberium, but have some of the strongest armored units and have mobile repair bases. Nod, on the other hand, employs greater use of cloaking technology making them better at quick strikes. Each faction has a distinct feel through form and function that players will appreciate.

Whichever side you choose, gameplay can be furious. While some players might want to sit back and enjoy the relative safety of a fortified base, giving an enemy time to expand and tech up can have disastrous consequences. The design here doesn't force players into the battlefield as a game like Company of Heroes does, but it also becomes pretty apparent, especially when fighting against hard or better AI, that turtling is a poor choice if you want to win. Late game units are so powerful that letting any enemy get the drop on you is practically suicide. Pushing the action and taking over new resource points is really the only way to counteract the mad amounts of units a fully funded army can pump out.

The thing to remember is that teching up goes quick, which means that somebody is going to get a leg up pretty quickly depending on the strategies taken. As a result, those of you looking for a game you can get in and out of relatively quickly should be very happy with C&C 3. The average time for skirmish or multiplayer maps is between 15-30 minutes.

FreeStyle Street Basket Ball

The game had a rather simple explanation back in 2006 during a pre-E3 media tour – play pickup games, earn points, get stuff. In hindsight that would be like explaining a Madden football game like get the ball, score points, win the Super Bowl. There is so much more to FreeStyle Street Basketball than merely playing pickup games, et cetera.

First, the game is about skill, knowing your position and using your position strengths to their fullest advantage. A center heading outside the arc to throw up three-pointers is like a guard playing inside and thinking they are going to be a dominating rebounder – it’s not going to happen very often.

GameZone.com was on hand at the Sierra Spring Event, showcasing a variety of upcoming titles. FreeStyle was one of the PC titles on display. The game moves into an open beta on the 19th of the month, at which time servers may contain a wide range of games, other than the sparse number available during the event.

But hands on was available and the game was surprising in the flow and skill it takes. Control will have a bit of a learning curve, with the body movement relegated to the arrow keys and game mechanics (steal, pass, rebound, shoot, et cetera) tied in to the W, A, S, D and F keys.

Yes, you do earn points and can buy better street gear, but the gear is not just for show. They are like buffs in a massively multiplayer online game (which, technically, FreeStyle is). You may have a shirt that improves your rebounding skill, or you get more accuracy for three-point shots. Tattoos can create bonus experience (experience is earned with in-game play) from a game.

The game setup is simple: you create a character (male or female), select a position, drop into the game’s central lobby and then get into a game. You can play in the versus mode (2v2 or 3v3, for example), or hop into the team lounge, get onto a team and play a court until beaten.

As you earn points you will level up and be able to acquire better gear. The game has 45 levels and the first 15 are free to download and play. If you wish to progress past level 15, you will have to buy the game. There are other advantages to buying the game – such the ability to open up other character slots.

The game has some elements that might detract. The collision paths are broad and you may have trouble working around a body just standing still. But once the controls become familiar, the game starts to sparkle with on-court gaming that is rather enjoyable.

FreeStyle Street Basketball screenshots

The first time in a game was a little discouraging. The character created to play was a power forward, and that meant playing inside. The other team had a level 3 shooting guard that could light it up from three-point range. The game ended in regulation. The controls, though, had become semi-comfortable. Game two involved two forwards against two guards. It started off badly with the guards making some steals (Ok, they were picking my pocket so clean I won’t have to worry about lint for a long time), and hitting some outside Js. But just as they started to get too comfortable in aggressively trying to steal the ball, quick passes opened up lanes to drive inside and dunk. Regulation ended in a tie. The guards hit some three-pointers in OT to nurse a lead, but the rim seemed to tighten up on them and rebounding allowed the forwards to get back in and tie the game at the end of that first overtime.

Games can’t end in a tie. That second game went several overtimes before inside dominance put the lead out to double digits with less than a minute remaining. The guards, forced to toss up deep 3-point attempts, couldn’t get back into it.

The feeling of earning a hard-fought win was very satisfying.

FreeStyle sports a cel-shaded graphical look that works within the context of the game. The ball will flash white when it is going through the hoop. No flash means a miss and a free ball that you will need to track down and rebound for possession.

The game has been big in Asia, and there is some U.S. content going in. When the game launches, there will also be tournaments and ladders that players can participate in to make the experience an ongoing challenge, as well as fun.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles Review

Oblivion blew open the gates last year as the fourth game in the long running series of Elder Scrolls. It won numerous awards and caused more relationship break-ups than seen on the Jerry Springer show in a year. Now, almost exactly a year later, the first official expansion is released - Shivering Isles. Not only does it deliver a significant main quest (as long as full games usually are if not longer), but it also succeeds in building on everything that was good within the original and then some.

After installing the game, no matter how far along in the game you are, you begin to hear murmurs of a magical portal emerging in Niben Bay. This portal is different from the ones you’re used to because it takes you to the Shivering Isles instead of Oblivion. You are soon introduced to and soon “hired” by Sheogorath, the ruler of the two worlds within the shivering Isles known as Mania and Dementia. Mania is a bit brighter and lush world filled with interesting colors and plants while Dementia is more murky and cryptic. But the real enjoyment is with the missions...

And while some of Oblivions missions were a little dull Shivering Isles is chalk-full of spectacularly fun things to do. Although most take place in dungeons deep within the earth, the types of missions vary from scavenger hunts to assassinations to setting booby-traps. And to complement the new variety of tasks are a whole slew of fresh items, armor and weapons; every one which you will need to defeat the new monsters and behemoths within the demented worlds including a whole band of knights. The new creatures are pretty challenging, kicking my butt multiple times and will give you a good run for your money.

And overall, Shivering Isles is a great run for your money. But with every new addition there is a chance for some things not to go right. Luckily, Shivering Isles only has a few. As with Oblivion, the game can chug at some spots bringing my X1800 to its knees. Also, for no reason at all my computer froze randomly a couple times but it didn’t set me back that far. But I feel compelled to mention that although I myself never ran into this, there is apparently a bug that crashes the entire game and renders your saves unusable after you log 150hrs into it. Just a sign of warning, and hopefully Bethesda is hard at work to fix this issue. But these are all minor quibbles, and hardly detract from the grandiose world that has been created here.
